Google Stupidity

So a very large and popular German YouTube channel called “Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell” with over 25 million subscribers just ended up on YouTube’s naughty list and had views “choked”, otherwise known as “shadow banned” because YouTube’s “automated AI detection tools” had incorrectly flagged the channel as an AI slop vendor.

AI shite has been destroying the average user’s experience on YouTube for a while now. The sheer number of channels pumping out 100% AI generated garbage now is off the charts. This has translated into (one presumes) finally hitting Google’s bottom line it would seem, and so suddenly they have decided to do something about it.

In what appears to be an irony overload such that Alanis Morissette driving a pickup truck collecting scrap metal on the way to the launderette pales into comparison… Google, who for the last few years have been pushing video generation AI products harder than a crack dealer on a council estate, also decided to use what is most likely “AI” to detect AI generated videos on their platform and automatically shadow-ban them, with zero human intervention.

It is only the fact that a very popular (and therefore financially lucrative for YouTube) channel with 25+ million subscribers could get to speak to a human being at YouTube and get this sorted. Most channels would be completely fucked, and would just get ignored by more automated systems.

I expect this spectacular own goal to make no difference whatsoever to the ongoing degeneration of YouTube.
