Hello, Can We Have Your Liver?
Three so-called doctors have put together a published paper titled “Contextualizing the Dead Donor Rule in an Era of Voluntary Euthanasia”.
The abstract of this paper is as follows:
“Growing acceptance of voluntary euthanasia, which opens the door to death by organ donation, warrants a recontextualization of the dead donor rule and assessment of the ethical principles involved.”
Another quote from the paper says:
“Yet scholars continue to debate whether the DDR fundamentally requires the donor to be dead or whether its ethical essence lies entirely in the prohibition against killing.”
Hmm yes, is the issue here really about not harvesting someone’s organs until they are actually dead, or is that okay and the dilemma is in fact whether doctors killing people is a problem? Luckily “scholars” are on the case. Phew.
These three supposed medical doctors also wrote “Advances in life-sustaining technology have increasingly blurred distinctions between life and death”.
If your doctor is unable to make the distinction between you being alive or dead, can I respectfully suggest you seek a second opinion.
This is not medical advice you understand, because I am forbidden from advising on medical matters because I do not have a special piece of paper. You should (apparently) only take medical advice from the special guild of stethoscope wearers because they know stuff. They might not be able to make the distinction between alive or dead, but you should not let this concern you. They are the experts after all.
